Semi-formal dress code: what it means and what to wear

“Semi” makes it sound half-hearted. It is not. Semi-formal is a dressed-up code: a suit, a cocktail dress, polished shoes. The word just means it stops short of black tie.

The short answer

Semi-formal sits one step below formal. Men wear a suit, usually with a tie; women wear a cocktail dress, a dressy jumpsuit or elegant separates around knee to midi length. Daytime events allow lighter colors; evening events call for darker, dressier choices.

Women
Cocktail dress, dressy jumpsuit or elegant separates, knee to midi length.
Men
Suit (darker for evening), dress shirt, tie usually, leather shoes.
Anything else
A suit with or without a tie, or dressy separates in a matching palette.

Why semi-formal confuses people

On a scale from smart casual to black tie, semi-formal sits just past the middle. It asks for the outfits most people own for weddings and important dinners: a suit, a cocktail dress. The “semi” only means you can leave the tuxedo and the gown at home.

The second source of confusion is that semi-formal and cocktail attire are nearly interchangeable. If you have a cocktail outfit, you have a semi-formal outfit. The main difference is that semi-formal is also used for daytime events, while cocktail implies evening.

Women: what to wear to a semi-formal event

  • A cocktail dress from just above the knee to mid-calf, in crepe, satin, silk, lace or a structured knit.
  • A dressy jumpsuit with a fluid leg, or tailored trousers with a silk top.
  • A skirt suit or trouser suit in a soft color with a dressy blouse, especially by day.
  • Shoes: heels, block heels, elegant sandals or dressy flats.
  • A layer: a tailored jacket, a pashmina or a cropped cardigan in a refined knit.

Long dresses: a floor-length gown usually reads as too formal for semi-formal, especially by day. A light, flowing maxi can work at summer or outdoor events.

Men: what to wear to a semi-formal event

  • A suit in navy, grey or charcoal for evening; mid-grey, light blue, tan or linen blends for daytime and summer.
  • A dress shirt, white or light blue, or a subtle pattern.
  • A tie in most cases. At relaxed or creative events an open collar is fine, but bring one.
  • Leather dress shoes: oxfords, derbies or polished loafers, with a matching belt.

A blazer with contrasting trousers can work for a daytime semi-formal event, but a matching suit is the safer reading. A tuxedo is too much.

Anything else: any gender and cultural dress

  • A dark or mid-tone suit worn with or without a tie.
  • Dressy separates in a matching palette: wide-leg trousers, a silk shirt and a long jacket.
  • A cocktail dress, whoever wears it.
  • Dressy cultural or national clothing at the same level: a kurta set in silk, a barong, a dressy kaftan.

Daytime vs evening semi-formal

Time of day matters more for semi-formal than for almost any other code.

Daytime (before about 5 pm)
Lighter suits, pastels, florals, linen blends, sundress-style cocktail dresses, loafers and sandals. A tie is still common, but in a lighter color or knit.
Evening
Darker suits, jewel tones and black, satin and velvet, polished leather, a tie. Dress as you would for cocktail attire.

Semi-formal weddings

Semi-formal is one of the most common wedding codes. Wear a cocktail dress or dressy separates, or a suit with a tie; avoid white, ivory and anything bridal; and check the ceremony venue for modesty expectations and terrain.

The wedding guest dress code guide covers time of day, venues and cultural notes.

Semi-formal school dances

Some North American high schools call a winter dance a “semi.” For these, a short or knee-length dress, or dress trousers with a dress shirt (tie optional), is the usual expectation. Always check the school's own guidance, which often lists what is and is not allowed.

A note on “informal” in the UK

On British and some Commonwealth invitations, “informal” is traditionally a polite way of saying lounge suit: a business suit and tie. It does not mean jeans. If you see it, dress at least semi-formal.

What to avoid

  • Jeans, sneakers, polos and casual cotton dresses.
  • Tuxedos and full ball gowns.
  • Very short, clubby outfits at weddings, religious venues or work events.
  • White and ivory at weddings.

Questions people ask

Is semi-formal the same as cocktail attire?

Almost. Both mean a suit or a knee- to midi-length cocktail dress. Semi-formal is also used for daytime events, where lighter colors and fabrics are welcome.

Do I need a tie for semi-formal?

Usually yes, especially in the evening and at weddings. At a relaxed daytime event, an open collar with a suit is often fine.

Can I wear a long dress to a semi-formal event?

A formal gown tends to look over-dressed. A light, flowing maxi dress can work for summer and outdoor events; otherwise choose knee to midi length.

Can I wear dark jeans to semi-formal?

No. Even dark, tailored jeans are too casual for semi-formal. Wear suit trousers or tailored trousers.
